Royal Berkshire Hospital, Endoscopy Department Refurbishment

Overview

The Royal Berkshire Hospital in Reading commissioned a comprehensive refurbishment of its Endoscopy department. Works were carried out within the live hospital, with the main constraint being the need to keep services operational for the surrounding wards.

Scope of works

The project involved the installation of new ventilation, air conditioning, heating, domestic services, medical gases and BMS. Air conditioning systems were relocated to align with the new departmental layouts. A new air handling unit and ventilation ductwork were craned onto the roof, requiring careful coordination with the main contractor and NHS Estates to ensure public and staff safety. We also coordinated with the fire safety officer to ensure that fire compartmentation was satisfactory.

Mechanical, electrical and BMS services were installed according to the consultant's design, enhancing airflow and climate control. The project also included alterations to the existing drainage system to accommodate the revised floor plan. A new medical gas Area Valve Service Unit (AVSU) was installed, along with the necessary pipework and gas supply systems.

Outcome

The project was completed on time and within budget, fully complying with Health Technical Memoranda standards.
