How Quickly Can You Get a Temporary Boiler in Colchester?

When your boiler fails in the middle of an Essex winter, the first thing you want to know is how soon the heating and hot water will be back on. A temporary boiler can often be running within a day or two in Colchester, but the real answer depends on the size of the building, the fuel available and how easy the site is to reach. Here is what to expect and how to avoid the common delays.

Realistic timescales in and around Colchester

For a small electric or compact oil-fired unit serving a house, flat or small office, same day or next day installation is often possible, as long as the right size unit is in stock and the connection is straightforward. Colchester sits on the A12 and A120, so getting equipment from depots elsewhere in Essex is rarely the slow part.

Larger buildings take longer. Schools, care homes, churches and commercial premises with a plant room usually need a quick site survey before the hire unit arrives. In those cases 2 to 5 working days from first call to full heat is typical. If a contractor promises a big plant room setup within hours without seeing the site, ask what they are basing that on.

What speeds it up or slows it down

Most delays come down to a handful of practical issues rather than the boiler itself.

  • Fuel type: electric units need a suitable supply, and larger ones often need three phase power. Oil units need a bunded tank delivered and filled. Gas connections must be made by a Gas Safe registered engineer.
  • Heat output: a 15 to 30kW unit is easy to source. Units of 100kW and above are less common and in higher demand from November to February.
  • Access: narrow streets in the Dutch Quarter, town centre parking restrictions and limited space around rural properties near Dedham or Tiptree can affect delivery and where the unit can sit.
  • Connection points: if your system already has valved tee connections for temporary plant, hook up can take an hour or two. If not, pipework needs altering first.
  • Timing: calls on a Friday afternoon or over a bank holiday weekend may wait until the next working day.

How to help the engineer get you running faster

The quickest jobs are the ones where the hire company knows exactly what it is dealing with before the van leaves. A few minutes gathering information can save a wasted trip.

  • The output of your existing boiler in kW, usually on the data plate inside the casing
  • Photos of the boiler or plant room, the pipework and any spare valves
  • Where outside a unit could stand, ideally on level hard ground close to the building
  • Whether you have three phase power, and the size of your main fuse
  • Whether you need heating, hot water or both, and roughly how long for

What it is likely to cost

Pricing depends heavily on output, fuel, hire length and how much installation work is needed, so treat any figures as a rough guide only. Small domestic or light commercial units are often in the region of £150 to £400 per week to hire. Larger commercial boilers can run from around £500 to £1,500 or more per week.

On top of the hire rate, expect charges for delivery, connection and collection, and you will pay for the fuel or electricity used. Many hire companies have a one week minimum. Always ask for a written quote that separates the hire, installation and fuel so you can compare like with like.

Plan ahead where you can

If your boiler is old, or you are booking a replacement, arrange temporary heat at the same time rather than waiting for a breakdown. Landlords, schools and care providers in particular have a duty to keep occupants warm, and having a temporary connection point fitted during routine maintenance makes any future emergency much quicker to resolve.

Winter is the busiest time for hire stock across north Essex. Booking a planned changeover for spring or late summer gives you the best choice of units and the least disruption.

Frequently asked questions

Can a temporary boiler be installed on the same day in Colchester?

Often yes for smaller homes and offices, if a suitable unit is available and the connection is simple. Larger commercial systems usually need a survey first, so allow a few working days.

Do I need planning permission for a temporary boiler outside my building?

For a short term hire unit, planning permission is not normally needed. If you are in a conservation area such as parts of central Colchester, or the unit will stay for many months, it is worth checking with Colchester City Council.

Will a temporary boiler provide hot water as well as heating?

Most temporary boilers can supply both, either directly or through your existing hot water cylinder. Tell the hire company what you need at the start so they bring the right unit and fittings.
