This job was really two contracts combined together. Firstly installing a new air handling unit and secondly upgrading the cold water storage. We were the principal contractors appointed by Stevenage Borough Council.

The new 395Kw duty air cooled liquid chiller was to be installed on the roof of the Stevenage Arts and Leisure Centre. New steels, mesh platform and handrail system had to be put in place to accommodate the new unit.
Modifications were also made to the cooling system pipework. The challenge was the size of the pipes, some were as big as 10” in diameter. This was easily handled by us, through the use of an off-site manufacturing facility, where we had to pipes specially made to size.
We replaced the pumps and ensured Glycol refrigerant levels were correct.
On the same roof top, we stripped out the redundant cold water storage tanks. Two large sectional cold water storage tanks were isolated, the contents drained and dismantled to allow the sections to be removed.
We had a crane on Site for one day, we made full use of this; lowering the old tank sections from the roof, and lifting the new chiller and pumps into position.
For safety, we had to divert the pedestrian footpath (running from the train station to the town centre) whilst the crane was lifting. We committed plenty of A C Preou bodies on the day, to direct both the works and the pedestrians. (We even helped carry buggies and prams up stairways)
As you can see from the photos, we had blue skies and sunshine whilst the crane was there; ideal weather for working on the roof!
The project was completed on time and to the high standards that Stevenage Borough Council and their consultants, TGA Consulting Engineers, have come to expect from us.
